Squid Game 001 Grandpa kanbu’s current status [1 year in prison for forced molestation]
Actor Oh Young-soo (79), well known as ‘Grandpa Kanbu’, was sent to trial on charges of forcible harassment, and the prosecution requested a one-year prison sentence.
The prosecution made this request at the decision hearing held on the 2nd by Judge Jeong Yeon-ju, Criminal 6, Seongnam Branch, Suwon District Court, and requested the court to issue an order to restrict employment and disclose personal information.
On this day, the prosecution said, “In 2017, the defendant distortedly expressed his longing for youth by saying, ‘You look like a woman’ at a drinking party with the victim, Mr. A, and sent an apology text message to Mr. “He made Mr. A feel frustrated by avoiding it.”
He then asked, “Please impose severe punishment on the defendant who did not reflect during the investigation and trial process.”
In his final statement, Oh Young-soo said, “It is very difficult and painful to stand in court at this age. It is devastating to see my life end in this situation and I feel like my entire life is falling apart,” and appealed, “I hope for a wise decision.”
Oh Young-soo’s lawyer also declared the not guilty, saying, “Other than the victim’s statement and the evidence derived from it, there is very little evidence that fits this case,” and “Considering the location, conditions, and time of the molestation, there are doubts about whether the defendant could have committed the crime.” I made my final argument asking for it to be done.
Oh Young-soo is accused of hugging Mr. A in August 2017, saying, “Let’s hug each other once,” on a promenade in a local area where she was staying for a theater performance. In September of the same year, she was also accused of kissing Mr. A on the cheek in front of his residence.

Mr. A filed a complaint against Oh Young-soo in December 2021, but the police at the time transferred the case with an indictment recommendation in February of the following year, and finally did not transfer the case in April after reviewing the investigation of witnesses and the lawyer’s opinion at the prosecution’s request for a supplementary investigation. However, following Mr. A’s objection, Oh Young-soo was reinvestigated at the Suwon District Prosecutor’s Office, Seongnam Branch, and the case was handed over to trial.
During the prosecution’s investigation, Oh Young-soo denied the related charges, saying, “I was only holding hands to give directions.” At the first trial in February last year, before entering the court, he told reporters, “I am sorry for my behavior,” and “I will reveal the truth.”
At the first trial at the time, Oh Young-soo’s lawyer also denied the indictment, saying, “I walked with the victim on a promenade and visited the victim’s house, but there was no fact of forcible molestation.”

Meanwhile, Oh Young-soo was born on October 19, 1944, and began his acting career in 1968 with the play ‘A Daytime Walk in the Park’. Afterwards, he appeared in the movies ‘Exorcism’, ‘Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring’, dramas ‘Yeongaesomun’, ‘The Return of Iljimae’, ‘Queen Seondeok’, and ‘Mushin’.
In particular, he received great love for playing the role of ‘Grandpa Kanbu’ oil man in the Netflix original series ‘Squid Game’, which was released in 2021. With this work, Oh Young-soo became the first Korean actor to win the Best Supporting Actor award at the 79th Golden Globe Awards.
The sentencing hearing is scheduled to be held on March 15th.
